Sterling Bathroom Remodeling: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock, match, and install Sterling-compatible bathroom remodel components throughout Los Angeles, with most full bathroom remodels running between $10,620 and $33,040 depending on scope, fixtures, and what’s hiding behind the walls. The typical tell that something’s failing: a Sterling shower wall panel starts pulling away from the drywall, a Vikrell tub develops hairline cracks near the drain, or you notice water staining on the ceiling below a second-floor bath. Our crews carry the most common Sterling replacement parts on the truck, and we can usually get uncommon items from our Los Angeles suppliers within 48 hours.
Which Sterling Models This Applies To
Sterling, a Kohler company, builds bathrooms around two main material lines: Vikrell (compression-molded fiberglass reinforced plastic) and Solid Vikrell (a denser formula used in higher-end tub and shower units). If your tub or shower is Sterling, look for a white or etched label near the drain skirt or the top flange of the shower wall. The label will have a model number starting with a letter code like 7114 (Ensemble tub-shower), 7225 (Medley series), or 7605 (Accord). That number matters more than the series name. A common compatibility gotcha we see throughout Los Angeles: older Sterling 3-panel shower surrounds won’t accept new 4-panel wall kits, even when the footprint is identical, because the seam tolerances changed in 2015. Measure twice and match the label number, not the marketing name. For most failures, OEM Vikrell components are the right call. Aftermarket reproductions exist, but we’ve seen too many with warped flanges that don’t seat correctly against Sterling’s integrated tile flange.

Signs Your Sterling Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
Here’s what Los Angeles homeowners actually notice before they call us:
- Soft spots at the tub floor or shower pan. Vikrell can flex and crack when the substrate beneath it wasn’t set properly in the original install. You’ll feel a slight give underfoot that wasn’t there before. Left alone, that crack becomes a slow leak into the subfloor.
- Peeling or bubbling caulk at the wall-to-pan seam. Sterling panels expand and contract with Los Angeles temperature swings, especially in bathrooms that run hot showers in winter. When the silicone bond fails, water wicks behind the panel and degrades the wallboard.
- Persistent mildew smell that returns within days of cleaning. Not a housekeeping problem. That smell is water sitting inside a wall cavity or under a pan that isn’t draining. Vikrell itself doesn’t absorb water, but the framing around it does.
- Water staining on the ceiling below the bathroom. The only reason a second-floor Sterling shower leaks downward is a failed drain gasket or a cracked pan body. In Los Angeles homes built before 2000, we frequently see the original rubber compression gasket hardened and silent-failing for months before the stain shows.
- Visible hairline cracks near the drain or at the step-over threshold. The drain area gets flexed with every single use. A crack there isn’t cosmetic – it’s structural fatigue, and it will only propagate.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A full Sterling bathroom remodel in Los Angeles typically lands between $10,620 and $33,040. At the lower end, you’re looking at a tub-to-shower conversion, a Sterling shower pan, one wall system, basic valve trim, and existing plumbing left in place. At the higher end, we’re moving walls, replacing all drain lines, adding a second vanity, leveling a subfloor that’s been soaking for years, and handling tile floors with a Schluter strip (the metal trim that seals the edge where tile meets flooring). Every price we give is in writing before work starts, with a line-item breakdown of parts and labor. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the work we do for a full year from the completion date: if a Sterling component we installed fails, we come back and fix it at no charge to you. No dispute process, no conditions.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check three things yourself: read the model number on the drain-skirt label, wipe down the caulk lines and look for gaps, and press gently around the drain to feel for flex. That gives you a good diagnostic picture. What we don’t recommend: cutting out a Vikrell pan or unbolting a Sterling drain assembly as a DIY project. The drain connection on Sterling units is a compression fitting that’s easy to overtighten, and once a Vikrell pan is scored or cracked from a misstep during removal, it’s unrepairable – you’re buying a new pan anyway, plus paying for the demo cleanup. If you’re not sure what you’re dealing with, call us at (213) 632-5711. We’ll help you identify the part over the phone, and if it makes sense, we’ll come out and do the work right the first time.
FAQs

A properly installed Sterling Vikrell unit lasts 20 to 30 years in Los Angeles – the fiberglass resin formulation holds up well against hard water and UV, but the real failure point is usually the drain gasket and the caulk seams, which you should expect to replace every 5 to 7 years. If your unit is failing at year 8 or 9, the original install is usually the culprit, not the Sterling product. Call (213) 632-5711 and we’ll tell you what we’re seeing.
Drain assemblies and caulk seams can be repaired; cracked Vikrell bodies cannot. If the crack is in the structural shell, we recommend replacing the pan or surround – patching compounds don’t bond reliably to the compression-molded surface. We’ll give you an honest read before any work is quoted.
Most tub-to-shower conversions are done in 3 to 5 working days. A full bathroom remodel with tile, moving plumbing, and custom vanity runs 2 to 3 weeks. We’ll give you a written timeline along with your written price, and you’ll know who’s coming each day by name and photo before they arrive.
