CertainTeed Bathroom Remodeling: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

CertainTeed bathroom remodeling in Los Angeles typically runs $10,620 to $33,040 installed, depending on whether you’re replacing a single failed component or rebuilding the wet area entirely. We stock CertainTeed-compatible backer board, waterproofing membrane, and trim systems on our trucks, so most repairs start same-day. What usually brings a Los Angeles homeowner to this page is a cracked tile, a soft spot near the tub, or water staining on the ceiling below the bathroom – and they’ve learned their 1990s CertainTeed substrate gave out long before the tile did.

Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

A freestanding soaking tub in a remodeled primary bathroom

We work across the CertainTeed product lines most common in Los Angeles bathrooms built or renovated between 1985 and 2015. The big one is CertainTeed’s Durock cement board – the gray, fiber-reinforced panel behind your tile. You’ll find a product stamp on the back face if a corner is exposed; most older Los Angeles homes have 1/2-inch panels, while newer shower surrounds spec 5/8-inch. The second line is CertainTeed’s diamondback tile backer, which was sold as a lighter alternative and tends to degrade faster along the bottom edge where shower splash collects. If you see a green or blue stamped code starting with “CT” on an exposed edge, that’s CertainTeed.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha: CertainTeed Durock is not the same as Durock branded by USG after 2019. The older CertainTeed panels used a different fastener pattern – 8 inches on center versus the 6-inch spec on today’s boards. If a previous contractor replaced a section using the wrong spacing, you’ll see cracked grout lines radiating from that patch within a year. We match the original fastener schedule, not just the panel thickness. For OEM versus aftermarket, we recommend genuine CertainTeed backer for structural repanels and quality aftermarket membrane like Schluter Kerdi for waterproofing, since CertainTeed never made a fabric membrane and Kerdi outperforms liquid-applied membranes in Los Angeles’s dry-then-suddenly-soaked climate cycles.

Signs Your CertainTeed Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

  • Grout cracks along horizontal lines at the same elevation. This almost always means the backer board is flexing because the fastener spacing was wrong or the panels have absorbed water and swelled. The grout cracks first because it can’t flex at all.
  • Slight bounce when you step in the tub or shower. CertainTeed backer over a tub flange needs a 1/4-inch gap above the tub deck. When that gap was filled with grout or mortar during the original install, every step you take transfers movement up through the tile, and the first sign is a springy feel underfoot.
  • Water staining on the ceiling below the bathroom. By the time you see this, the waterproofing layer has failed and the backer has been wicking water sideways for months. Los Angeles slab homes with second-floor baths are the most common callers for this one.
  • Mold smell that gets worse after showers, not better. CertainTeed’s older panels were cement-based and won’t rot, but they’ll hold enough moisture against the studs to grow mold on the framing. If you smell it, the remediation is bigger than a regrout.
  • Tile that sounds hollow when tapped with a screwdriver handle. This is delamination – the tile has separated from the backer. With older CertainTeed board, it usually happens at the bottom course first, where splash water sits.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A walk-in shower with large-format tile and a built-in niche

In Los Angeles, a CertainTeed bathroom remodel ranges from $10,620 to $33,040 installed. The spread is driven by how much of the original substrate has to come out. A shower repanel with new CertainTeed backer, waterproofing, tile, and a replacement shower valve lands in the $10,620 to $15,000 zone. A full bathroom gut including tub-to-shower conversion, new floor pan, vanity, lighting, and finish work pushes toward the $25,000 to $33,040 range. For a smaller guest bath where we’re keeping the layout, budget $5,900 to $14,160.

Every quote is a written line-item price before work starts – you’ll see the backer board, membrane, tile labor, plumbing, and haul-away broken out separately. That’s our standard, not an add-on. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if anything fails within a year of completion, we return and fix it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

If your CertainTeed backer is cracking grout lines and you’re tempted to regrout it yourself – don’t. Regrouting over a failing substrate just buries the problem and delays the real repair. You can safely do the detective work: pull off a shower drain cover and look at the exposed cross-section, or tap tiles with a screwdriver handle and mark the hollow ones with painter’s tape. That gives us a clear picture before we even visit. But pulling tile and replacing backer in a wet area is not a weekend job – get the waterproofing detail wrong and you’ll pay twice. If the tile is falling off the wall, call us at (213) 632-5711 and we’ll send someone who can tell you in ten minutes whether it’s a patch job or a full repanel.
