Belgard Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock Belgard-compatible driveway pavers and replacement units in Los Angeles, with most single-paver and small-section repairs installed for $295 – $825, while full paver driveway installations run $8,260 – $21,240 depending on square footage, pattern, and base work. Most owners discover a problem the same way: a paver sinks into a soft spot after rain, a corner cracks under a truck tire, or a section shifts and separates from the soldier course along the edge. You can usually live with one cracked paver, but once water starts finding its way under the base, the freeze-thaw cycle (mild as it is here) and our clay-rich soils in neighborhoods from Encino to Eagle Rock turn a $300 fix into a $4,000 reset faster than most people expect.
Isaac Pruett, who runs Mason Remodeling Co Los Angeles, grew up watching his uncle rebuild half a house on Roscoe Boulevard, and he’ll tell you the same thing he tells every client: a driveway is only as good as what’s underneath it. The paver is the pretty part. The base is the part that keeps it pretty.
Which Belgard Models This Applies To

Belgard makes three paver lines most common in Los Angeles driveways: the Cambridge Cobble series (three-piece modular system with a tumbled, timeworn edge), the Catalina Slate series (smooth, banded faces that read more contemporary), and the Holland Stone series (the classic rectangular paver you see in older Beverlywood and Westchester driveways). Each series has its own dimensional spacer bars and thickness specs, so a Cambridge Cobble unit won’t seat correctly next to a Holland Stone, even if both are “Belgard.” That’s the first mistake we see with aftermarket patch jobs: someone grabs whatever paver is on the shelf at the big-box store, lays it into a Cambridge pattern, and six months later it’s rocking underfoot because the spacer lugs don’t align.
How to identify yours: flip a loose paver and look at the embossed stamp on the back. Belgard pavers made in the last decade carry a two-letter manufacturing code along with the series name. Older Holland Stone units may only show “Belgard” and a plant code. Measure the paver’s length, width, and thickness in millimeters, not inches, because Belgard tolerances are metric and a 60mm paver won’t match an 80mm paver, end of story. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: for a full driveway, we order Belgard direct so color lots match. For a single-unit repair where the original color has been discontinued or is backordered eight weeks, we’ll use a supplier-approved equivalent and blend it, but we’ll tell you before we lay anything down that it won’t be a perfect match on day one.

Signs Your Belgard Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Settled or sunken sections near the garage apron or street transition. This is almost always base failure, not paver failure. The native Los Angeles soil under many older driveways was never properly compacted or got washed out by years of gutter overflow. One sunken spot is a repair; three or four sunken spots usually means the base has failed and the section needs to be lifted, re-graded, and re-compacted.
- Cracks running through multiple pavers in a line. A single cracked paver is usually impact damage. A crack that runs through five or six pavers in a straight line tells you the subgrade is moving underneath, often from tree roots (ficus trees in Sherman Oaks are notorious for this) or an old concrete slab underneath that’s heaving. Replacing the pavers without addressing the cause means you’ll replace them twice.
- Separating soldier course or edge pavers pulling away from the field. The edge restraint has failed or was never installed correctly. Without a solid edge, the entire field starts drifting outward under vehicle weight, and what looked like a half-inch gap in March becomes a two-inch gap by October.
- Paver wobbling or rocking when you step on it. The bedding sand has migrated out through a joint or down into a void in the base. A single rocking paver is a twenty-minute fix if caught early. Left alone, the rocking widens the joint, more sand escapes, and the wobble spreads to its neighbors.
- Widespread joint sand loss with weeds or ants working through the gaps. Joint sand is structural, not cosmetic. When it’s gone, pavers shift against each other, edges chip, and the interlock that makes a paver driveway strong becomes a liability. In Los Angeles, Argentine ants love nothing more than a sand-free paver joint, and they’ll turn a small void into a full-blown colony under your driveway.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the honest money picture for Los Angeles. A single-paver replacement (matching an existing Belgard unit, pulling the damaged one, resetting the bed, and re-sanding the joints) runs $295 – $825 depending on access and how many units need pulling. A small section repair of roughly 50 – 150 square feet runs $1,200 – $2,500, including base patching and recompaction. A full Belgard paver driveway installation lands at $8,260 – $21,240, and before you ask why the range is so wide: it comes down to square footage, whether we’re pulling an old concrete slab first, how much base material the soil needs, the paver series you choose, and the pattern complexity. A straight lay Holland Stone driveway on flat ground is the low end. A Cambridge Cobble herringbone with a radius border and a raised planter is the high end.

Just a plain statement of what’s covered, what’s excluded, and for how long.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s nothing dangerous about lifting a single paver to inspect what’s under it, and if you’re on a dry weekend in Los Angeles with a flathead screwdriver and some patience, you can pull a loose paver and check whether the bedding sand is still intact. What you shouldn’t try yourself: lifting and resetting more than a handful of pavers without a plate compactor, re-grading a failed base, or laying new edge restraint. Once you start moving more than a few square feet, you need the right compaction equipment and the right bedding depth, and most homeowner attempts end with a driveway that looks flat for three weeks and then settles unevenly after the first rain. If you’re not sure whether your base is salvageable, call us at (213) 632-5711 and we’ll tell you what we’re seeing before we recommend anything. Know who’s coming, know what it costs, know it’s guaranteed, everything else is just noise.
FAQs

A properly installed Belgard driveway in Los Angeles should last 25 – 40 years before the surface shows meaningful wear, and the pavers themselves rarely fail at all. What fails first is the base underneath, especially in neighborhoods with expansive clay soil like Los Feliz or Silver Lake, where seasonal moisture swings put more movement into the ground than the pretty top layer can absorb. Call (213) 632-5711 and we’ll assess what you’ve got before suggesting any replacement.
Yes, in most cases a cracked or sunken paver can be pulled, the bed reset, and the same paver relaid if it’s not split through. If the base underneath has failed, repair still works, but it requires lifting the section, adding and compacting new base material, and relaying the pavers, which is a small rebuild rather than a single-unit swap. We’ll give you a written price for either scope before we start.
A single-paver replacement takes under an hour once we’re on site. A small section repair of 50 – 150 square feet typically takes one to two days including excavation, base work, compaction, and re-sanding. Full driveway installations run three to seven days depending on size, pattern, and whether old material needs hauling out.
We stock common Belgard replacement units in Cambridge Cobble, Catalina Slate, and Holland Stone profiles on our trucks for same-visit repairs, and we order full-pallet quantities direct from Belgard for larger installations. If your paver color has been discontinued, we’ll show you the closest available match and put it in writing before you approve anything.
No. We deliver a written price before any work begins, and that price stands unless you add scope. If we open up a section and find the base is worse than expected, we stop, show you what we found, and give you a revised written quote for the additional work before proceeding. You don’t get a surprise invoice at the end.
Most paver repairs and replacements over an existing driveway footprint don’t require a permit in Los Angeles. If your project involves expanding the driveway width, changing the curb cut, or installing new drainage that ties into the street, a permit is usually required and we’ll handle it as part of the written quote. We’ll tell you upfront which situation applies to your property.
