Oldcastle Fence Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Oldcastle fence installation in Los Angeles typically runs $4,130 to $10,620 for a standard residential perimeter, including concrete footings, panels, posts, and hardware. We stock Oldcastle-compatible components on our trucks and can start most fence jobs the same week, not next month. Most homeowners call us after a section starts leaning or a gate won’t latch – the usual culprits are cracked post footings from clay soil movement and rusted post bases where irrigation overspray has been hitting the same spot for years.

Oldcastle’s precast concrete fence systems and ornamental steel lines are built for California’s dry climate, but Los Angeles has its own rules. The freeze-thaw cycle that wrecks fences in other states is not your problem here. What is your problem: expansive clay soil in neighborhoods like Baldwin Hills, Eagle Rock, and the San Fernando Valley that shifts with every wet-dry season, plus salt air within three miles of the coast. Both of those chew through standard steel hardware faster than the manufacturer’s average lifespan estimates suggest.

We are an independent Los Angeles installer that works with Oldcastle products. We are not affiliated with Oldcastle, but we know their catalog and their part numbers well enough to match what you have without making you chase down a spec sheet.

Which Oldcastle Models This Applies To

Oldcastle Infrastructure and Oldcastle APG produce several fence lines you will see around Los Angeles backyards and commercial properties: precast concrete panel systems, ornamental steel fencing, vinyl privacy lines, and the modular block-and-panel systems popular in newer tract developments in Porter Ranch and Playa Vista. The part you need depends on which system you have, and this is where people get it wrong.

The most common compatibility gotcha is post size. Oldcastle precast panels are heavy – a single 6-foot panel can weigh 180 pounds or more – and they require posts with a 4-inch by 4-inch or 6-inch by 6-inch steel core depending on wind exposure. If your property sits on a hillside in Mount Washington or gets hit by Santa Ana wind gusts, the smaller core is not enough regardless of what the original builder installed. We check the post-to-panel connection against LA’s wind zone map before quoting, not after the fence is half built.

For identification: look inside the post cap or on the bottom rail. Oldcastle stamps part numbers there on most lines produced after 2010. If the stamp is gone, measure the panel thickness. Precast panels run 1.75 to 2.5 inches thick. Ornamental steel posts are 2-inch or 2.5-inch square tube. Vinyl lines use 5-inch by 5-inch posts with 1.5-inch rails. If none of that matches, snap a photo and call us – we will identify it from the picture before we send anyone out.

OEM versus aftermarket: Oldcastle’s OEM hardware is good, but their older galvanized post bases were not spec’d for irrigation overspray that happens in nearly every Los Angeles yard. We stock aftermarket powder-coated steel bases and stainless fasteners that cost about 15% more and last twice as long. For panels and posts, we recommend OEM unless you are replacing a damaged section on a discontinued line, where a matched aftermarket panel from a local precaster gets you a better color match for less money.

Signs Your Oldcastle Fence Installation Is Failing

You do not need to be a contractor to spot these. You just need to walk your fence line once a month and know what you are looking at.

  • Leaning posts with visible gaps at the soil line. This is clay soil expansion pushing the concrete footing upward unevenly. In Los Angeles neighborhoods like North Hollywood and Culver City, the wet season swells the ground and the dry season shrinks it. The footing cracks, the post shifts, and the panel loses support.
  • Rust streaks running down from post caps or base plates. Sprinkler overspray is the usual culprit. Most Los Angeles irrigation systems hit the fence line at least twice a week. Powder coating and even galvanizing fail years early when they are soaked constantly.
  • Gates that drag or will not latch. The post holding the gate has moved. Gate posts carry double the load of line posts and need footings 30 to 36 inches deep in most LA soils. If yours was set shallow, it is dragging within three to five years.
  • Hairline cracks spreading across precast panels. Minor surface crazing is normal. Cracks wider than a credit card edge mean the panel is bearing weight it was not designed for, usually from a shifted post or a tree root pushing up underneath.
  • Loose or missing panel retaining clips on ornamental steel lines. These clips fail silently. One missing clip turns into three, and then the panel rattles, and then it drops. Wind on a ridgeline in Granada Hills accelerates this.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled laundry and mudroom with a bench, cubbies and painted cabinets

For Los Angeles, full Oldcastle fence installation runs $4,130 to $10,620. Where you land depends on three things: linear footage (the range above covers roughly 80 to 160 feet), whether you are replacing concrete panels or lighter vinyl or steel, and how much post foundation work the soil requires. A straight vinyl privacy fence on flat ground in Torrance lands near the bottom. A precast panel fence on a sloped lot in Silver Lake with retaining walls and bad footings lands near the top.

Our written quote breaks out parts and labor separately, so you see exactly what you are paying for. Parts typically run 40 to 55 percent of the total. Labor includes removing and hauling the old fence, digging and setting new concrete footings at the correct depth for your soil zone, installing posts and panels, and reinstalling or replacing gates. The written price we give you before we start is the price you pay. No change orders because we hit something unexpected – we verify post locations and soil conditions before quoting.

Every fence job is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If a post shifts, a panel cracks, or a gate stops latching within a year of completion, we return and make it right at no cost. That is 365 days from the completion date, in writing.

DIY or Call Us?

Here is the honest split. You can safely handle a few things: cleaning corroded hardware with a wire brush, tightening loose gate hinge bolts, adjusting gate latch alignment, and re-staining a faded vinyl section. None of that requires special tools or puts you at risk.

What you should not do yourself: digging out and resetting a precast concrete post. Those posts weigh 80 to 120 pounds each, and when a footing has failed, the post wants to fall. A falling concrete post can break bones. Same goes for working on a fence on a slope, where one wrong move with a digging bar sends the post downhill. And do not attempt a full panel replacement on precast systems without a two-person crew and the right lifting setup. We have seen too many crushed fingers from panels that slipped.

If what you have is a leaning post or a dragging gate, call (213) 632-5711. We will tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a quick repair or a section replacement, and you will get a written price before any work starts.
