Belgard Home Additions & ADU: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Belgard home additions and ADUs in Los Angeles typically run $53,100 to $153,400 for a full build, depending on square footage, foundation work, and utility connections. We stock Belgard-compatible pavers, wall blocks, and permeable hardscape components on our trucks and install them as part of larger addition and ADU projects across the LA basin. Most homeowners call us because their existing Belgard patio or walkway has shifted, cracked, or separated from a failing retaining wall, and they want the hardscape corrected before or during their addition work.
Here’s the thing most people don’t realize until they’re in it: Belgard pavers and wall systems are not one interchangeable product line. They’re a family of interlocking concrete units with different joint spacings, thicknesses, and base requirements. Matching the right paver to the right application matters more in Los Angeles than almost anywhere else in the country, because our expansive clay soils, seismic movement, and dry-season settling punish undersized base rock and wrong-joint sand harder than wetter climates. If your existing Belgard patio is failing and you’re planning an addition or ADU on the same lot, the two problems are usually connected. Fix them together.
Which Belgard Models This Applies To

Belgard manufactures its pavers and wall systems in several distinct product families, and the compatibility decision starts there. The Catalina Slate, Mega-Arbel, Urbana Stone, and Dublin Cobble lines each use different nominal dimensions, thicknesses (60mm vs 80mm), and interlocking patterns. A paver from the Catalina series will not seat correctly against a Dublin Cobble unit, even if both are labeled “tumbled” or “slate-texture.” The joint gap changes. The height changes. Within six months you’ll see lippage, chipping, or sand loss.
Before you order anything, flip over one of your existing pavers. Belgard stamps the series name and factory code on the underside of most units manufactured after 2012. If the stamp is worn off, measure the paver thickness in millimeters and the edge profile. Then look at the gaps: Belgard’s permeable systems (Aqua-Bric, Eco-Line) require 5-6mm joints and open-graded aggregate underneath, while standard interlocking systems use tighter 2-3mm joints and polymeric sand. Mixing the two is how you get a patio that floods in January and shifts in August. We’ll match OEM Belgard units when they’re still in production, and when a series has been discontinued we source approved third-party equivalents that match the dimensional profile within 1mm.

Signs Your Belgard Home Additions & ADU Is Failing
- Paver edges are separating from the perimeter. The restraint system (edge restraint or concrete bond beam) has failed, usually from water undermining the base. Once the perimeter opens, the entire field starts walking outward under foot traffic and the expansion and contraction of LA’s hot-to-cool daily cycle.
- Low spots hold standing water 48 hours after rain. The base rock has settled or washed out underneath, which means the compaction failed or a drainage channel shifted. In neighborhoods like Encino and Sherman Oaks with heavy clay soil, we see this within five to seven years when the sub-base wasn’t excavated deep enough.
- Retaining wall blocks are leaning or bulging at the midpoint. This is the one that gets dangerous, especially on hill lots in Silver Lake, Echo Park, and Mount Washington. The wall’s geogrid reinforcement or drainage gravel wasn’t installed correctly, and the pressure builds behind the wall. Do not stack more weight on top, and do not stand below it.
- Polymeric sand keeps washing out of the joints. This means the joint sand was never the right product for the joint width, or water is running across the surface faster than it can drain. In Los Angeles’s burst-and-drought rain pattern, this repeats every winter until the base fails.
- Cracks radiate from a single point in a paver or wall unit. One cracked paver is a bad pour. A spiderweb of cracks across three or four units means the point load from a new addition’s foundation or a heavy downspout is being transferred into your hardscape. That’s a structural conversation, not a paver swap.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A full Belgard hardscape replacement or new installation within an addition or ADU project in Los Angeles runs between $53,100 and $153,400. That range covers everything from a modest paver patio and walk-up connected to a new ADU, up to a large addition with extensive patio, retaining walls, and permeable driveway runs.
| Scope | Los Angeles Installed Range |
|---|---|
| Paver patio replacement (tear-out, base rebuild, new Belgard pavers) | $4,130 – $12,980 |
| Retaining wall rebuild (segmental block, drainage, geogrid) | $5,900 – $16,520 |
| ADU construction (full build, including hardscape connections) | $106,200 – $259,600 |
| Home addition (full build, including patio and walkway integration) | $53,100 – $153,400 |
What drives the number: access (can our crew get a skid steer into your yard or are we moving base rock by wheelbarrow), existing soil conditions, and whether the old base can be re-compacted or needs full removal. Every project gets a written price before any work starts. No verbal guesswork. No change orders that show up at the end. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the work for a full year from the completion date, and if anything fails we return free of charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely inspect your Belgard hardscape yourself. Check for cracked units, measure joint widths, note where water pools, and look at whether retaining walls are plumb. What you shouldn’t do is tear out a failing retaining wall, re-grade a base, or add height to a leaning wall. Retaining walls in Los Angeles hold back serious weight, especially on hillside lots, and a wall that lets go can take out a fence, a car, or worse. If the wall is taller than three feet and it’s moving, call us before you do anything else.
For paver patios, the most common DIY mistake we see is re-sanding joints over a failed base. It looks better for one season, then the underlying problem re-appears. At that point, you’ve spent money twice. Call (213) 632-5711 and we’ll look at the whole system: base, drainage, restraint, and surface. The estimate is free.
FAQs

Belgard concrete pavers and wall units last 25 to 40 years in Los Angeles when the base is properly compacted and drained, but the base itself typically needs rebuilding every 15 to 20 years, especially on clay-dominant soil in the Valley and central LA. The units rarely fail on their own; the ground underneath them does.
If the wall is leaning or bulging, no. The geogrid reinforcement or drainage behind the wall has already failed, and rebuilding is the only fix that restores structural integrity. Minor issues like cracked caps or shifted top courses can sometimes be repaired, but we won’t know until we expose what’s behind the face. Call (213) 632-5711 for an exact assessment, free of charge.
A paver patio replacement typically takes three to five working days. A retaining wall rebuild runs five to ten days, depending on height and access. When hardscape work is integrated into a full addition or ADU, the hardscape portion is scheduled alongside the foundation, framing, and utility phases, and the total project timeline is set at the start of your written estimate.
We keep a rolling stock of the most common Los Angeles Belgard series, including Catalina Slate and Mega-Arbel units, plus matching edge restraints and base aggregate. If your series is discontinued, we source an approved dimensional match before we quote. We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for interior finishes on additions and ADUs, so the whole project moves under one written estimate.
