James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
If you’re planning a bathroom remodel in Los Angeles with James Hardie materials, a full bathroom remodel typically runs $10,620 to $33,040 installed, and we schedule most jobs within two to three weeks of your estimate. That’s the honest number, and we put it in writing before any work starts. Most homeowners call us because their current bathroom has failed in some way: cracked tile, water intrusion behind the walls, a shower pan that’s been leaking slowly into the subfloor, or simply a layout that stopped working for their family years ago. The James Hardie piece usually comes up when we talk about what goes behind the tile: HardieBacker cement board is the wall substrate we recommend for wet areas in LA bathrooms, because it doesn’t swell or lose strength when it gets wet the way gypsum-based boards do.
Which James Hardie Models This Applies To
When we talk about James Hardie in a bathroom remodel, we’re almost always talking about HardieBacker cement board, which comes in two thicknesses: 1/4 inch for floors and 1/2 inch for walls. The compatibility gotcha most people miss is that HardieBacker is not the same as HardiePlank siding or HardiePanel, even though they share a brand name. You cannot substitute siding for a tile substrate. The correct product for a shower wall in Los Angeles is 1/2-inch HardieBacker (or an equivalent cement board), installed over studs with the seams taped and mudded, then waterproofed before tile goes up. For OEM versus aftermarket: HardieBacker has specific fastener requirements (ribbed galvanized roofing nails or cement-board screws) and requires an alkalai-resistant mesh tape at the seams. We stock 3×5 sheets of HardieBacker on our trucks, plus the matching fasteners and tape, so the material is usually on site the day we start. There are quality cement-board alternatives that perform comparably, and we’ll discuss those with you if James Hardie specific material is backordered or the job doesn’t warrant it. But in a wet area, we won’t cut the corner on substrate, regardless of brand.

Signs Your Existing Bathroom Remodel Is Failing
- Grout cracking or falling out along the shower floor lines. This usually means the subfloor or the substrate underneath is flexing, and the grout is the first thing to crack. In a properly built James Hardie shower, the substrate should be rigid enough to prevent this.
- Musty smell near the shower or tub that cleaning doesn’t remove. That’s water trapped behind a failed moisture barrier. In LA’s climate, trapped moisture plus warm air equals mold growth inside the wall cavity, and that’s a health issue, not just a smell.
- Tile that sounds hollow when you tap it. This means the tile has debonded from the substrate. Once the bond starts to fail, water moves in and the failure accelerates.
- Staining on the ceiling below the bathroom. A leaking shower pan or failed curb usually shows up as a coffee-colored stain on the ceiling of the room below. By the time you see it, the leak has been active for a while.
- The shower door no longer lines up square. This points to shifting or swelling in the wall framing or substrate, and in an LA home that’s often the first visible sign of a bigger moisture problem behind the tile.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A full James Hardie bathroom remodel in Los Angeles runs $10,620 to $33,040, and a smaller bathroom or powder room remodel starts around $5,900 to $14,160. A walk-in shower installation alone is $5,310 to $14,160, and a tub-to-shower conversion is $4,130 to $11,800. The range depends on the size of the room, the condition of the framing and subfloor we find, the tile and fixture selections you make, and whether we’re moving plumbing. Every bathroom estimate from Mason Remodeling Co includes demolition, HardieBacker substrate with proper waterproofing, tile work, fixture install, and cleanup, and the price we give you in writing is the price you pay. No change orders appear unless you request a change. We carry a 365-Day Done Right Promise: if anything we built fails within a year of completion, we come back and repair it at no cost.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s an honest split here. You can safely do some demo yourself: removing old vanity doors, pulling up an old vinyl floor, even unscrewing an old shower head. What you shouldn’t do is get into the wet-area construction. Improper HardieBacker installation is one of the most common causes of failed bathroom remodels we see in Los Angeles. The seams have to be taped with alkalai-resistant mesh tape, the fasteners spaced correctly, and the waterproofing applied to the board and the seams and the fastener heads. Miss one step and the board will eventually let water through to the framing, and by the time you notice, you’re tearing out the whole shower. If you want to do light prep and leave the waterproofing to us, that’s a conversation we’re glad to have. Call (213) 632-5711 and we’ll walk through what’s realistic for your bathroom.
FAQs

A properly installed HardieBacker substrate in a bathroom should last the life of the tile above it, typically 20 to 30 years in Los Angeles, provided the waterproofing was done correctly and the room is ventilated. The tile may need replacing before the substrate ever fails. If you want us to assess the condition of your existing bathroom, call (213) 632-5711 for a free estimate.
If the failure is limited to one area, like a cracked tile or a small grout section, a repair is often possible and costs far less than a remodel. But if water has reached the framing behind the HardieBacker, patching the surface won’t solve the underlying problem, and the affected area has to be opened up and rebuilt. We’ll tell you which situation you’re in after we inspect it.
A typical bathroom remodel in Los Angeles takes two to three weeks from demolition to a finished, usable bathroom, depending on the scope and any structural surprises we find behind the walls. We’ll give you a clear schedule before we start so you know what to expect every step of the way.
Yes, we keep 3×5 sheets of HardieBacker, cement-board fasteners, and mesh tape stocked on our trucks, so the substrate material is usually on site the day we start. If you’re also considering cabinetry or countertops in the remodel, we work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone as well, so the material options can be settled in one conversation.
